Scholar Challenge team goes undefeated in their division at New Philadelphia Invitational
Saturday, Jan 30, 2010
The TCC Scholar Challenge squad went 8-0 on the
day as they swept their division at the New Philadelphia Invitational held last Saturday. However, it was not without its drama as the Saints broke a 16-16 tie with Sandy Valley as junior Spencer Thomakos answered the very last question in the lightning round correctly. "We thought Spencer may have buzzed in too soon because the moderator didn't even read the rest of the question," said fellow junior Anthony Pruni, who was named MVP for their division, "but Spencer was all over it."
Besides Sandy Valley, the Saints defeated Garaway, Indian Valley, New Philadelphia split, Ridgewood,Strasburg, and Zanesville. Other members of the team include juniors Maddie Adams, Christina Anderson, Dominic Sandy, Ali Seymore, and Jacob Snider. Travis Craven was the lone sophomore on the squad. The team, coached by English Instructor Rich Jagunic, qualified for regional competition to be held in Steubenville on April 24.

Influenza situation being dealt with at TCC
The staff at Tuscarawas Central Catholic Jr High/Sr High is working with the Ohio Department of Health and other area health departments to monitor the influenza situation according to school nurse Lori Schreiner. "We are educating our students about influenza, pandemics, and good health habits, she said. "The most important thing that we can do is to wash hands frequently, use hand sanitizer, and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve."
Influenza symptoms include fever, sore throat, congestion, cough, chills, fatigue, body aches, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. Please keep students with these symptoms at home & contact your family physician. The CDC recommends students remain home until they have had a normal temperature for 24 hours without medication (acetaminophen/ibuprofen). Families are encouraged to be prepared by having supplies on hand before an illness occurs.
Our goal is to keep our students & staff healthy for a successful year. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov or www.flu.gov, or call 1(800)CDC-INFO.
